Hastings
HASTINGS town in Sussex (England), 75 km (47 miles) south-southeast of London; population 29 290. low trade activity. Many visitors come during the bathing season. The Battle of Hastings, between William of Normandy and Harold, the Anglo-Saxon king, took place on 14 October 1066 in Senlac, which is located 8 km (5 miles) from Hastings. It lasted from 9 am until sunset. The Anglo-Saxons stood their ground until Harold fell shot by an arrow. Two years later, the Conqueror founded the abbey named Battle Abbey on the battlefield; the name of Senlac was changed to that of Battle.
