HAM, Hametum, Hamum, county town and district, 25 kilometers southeast of Péronne (Somme), amid a swampy countryside ; pop 3 000. beet sugar factories. Castle with a keep 33 meters high, built in 1470 by Comte de Saint-Pol, and fortified with later structures. Joan of Arc, Mirabeau, ministers of Charles X, Prince Louis-Napoleon and many other people have been imprisoned there. Land of Vadé and General Foy. Beautiful parish church, which contains a magnificent set of organs and beautiful bas-reliefs.
