KILKENNY. — I. County in Ireland in the province of Leinster; 2,053 km2 ; pop. 109.310. Its surface is slightly bumpy, with a few hills about 300 m high. The River Nore runs across the county, which is bounded on East and South by rivers Barrow and Suir. Abundance of anthracite of lower quality. Quarry of beautiful black marble near Kilkenny. Various stone pillars of the pagan era, cromlechs and cairns can be seen.
— II. Capital of the county, forming itself a county on the River Nore, 95 km Southwest of Dublin; pop: 15,610. It contains: St. Canice Cathedral, built in the twelfth century, with a round tower 33 m high; two monasteries, a convent, ruins of a Franciscan monastery, a castle built by Strongbow, the Kilkenny college or grammar school and St. Kieran’s, a Roman Catholic seminary.
