Funchal

FUNCHAL the capital of the Madeira island, on the South-East coast; pop. 23 000. It is built on a wide and shallow bay, flanked by the steep promontories of Punta da Cruz to the West and of Cape Carajâo to the East, and surrounded by irregular volcanic hills. The port isn’t very important. The main export item is wine.
