Description:

A young man is sitting with a book on his lap and a hand to his forehead, as though deep in thought, while another wearing a horned hat and standing beside him points at a place on a large globe in a room filled with retorts and instruments, animal skeletons, and samples of exotic writings.

The title reads in the original French: L’étude.

Various techniques were used in this book to reproduce the original illustrations by Paul Avril, including heliogravure and chromotypographic processes.
