Description:

Plate depicting Ornithoptera priamus (referred to in the caption by its older synonym, Papilio panthous), a butterfly in the family Papilionidae, perched on the blossom of a red flower. The author describes the flower as a 'double variegated Japan rose,' which is possibly the species known today as Kerria japonica, typically bearing yellow flowers.
