Description:

A host and hostess stand next to a table set up in what could be a town square or a marketplace (stocks can be seen at the far end), and are treating two guests to meat and drinks while a couple appears in the background, presumably on its way to join the party. The author comments on this scene as follows:

New settlers in a town or village, on the Midsummer Eve immediately succeeding their arrival, set out a plentiful repast before their doors, of cold beef, bread, cheese, and ale. Those of their neighbours who feel inclined to cultivate their acquaintance sit down and artake of their hospitable fare, and thus eat and drink themselves into intimacy.
