Hand-colored aquatint showing a monumental hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) standing on the bank of a stream, its body seen from the side, but its head slightly turned in the viewer's direction. In the background, some of its congeners can be seen swimming in the stream as a group of people gathers on the opposite bank.
