Description:

A monk who was sitting at his desk in his study rises from his chair to write with a pair of compasses the Greek word ἀνάγκη on the wall facing him. Ἀνάγκη is often used as an equivalent to the Latin word fatum, meaning fate, or destiny, with a dismal hint. This picture is the opening illustration to Book 7.
