It is native to Mexico and the United States, where it can be found growing in deserts, rocky slopes, and other arid habitats. This small, slow-growing cactus forms dense clumps or mounds, and produces pink or red flowers in the spring and summer. Its stems are covered in dense clusters of spines, providing shelter and protection for small animals and insects.
