Description:

Stipple engraving showing Cypripedium calceolus, a species of flowering plant in the Orchidaceae family. It is a terrestrial orchid of the lady's slipper type, native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, with yellow and red-brown flowers that resemble a slipper. This plant is put under increasing pressure in many parts of its range due to habitat loss and over-collection.

The caption reads in the original French: Cypripedium calceolus — Sabot des Alpes.
