Title:
Le chambard socialiste
Author:
Gérault-Richard, Alfred et al.
Publisher:
Paris: Imprimerie Centrale, 1893-1894

Description:

The communards executed at the Père Lachaise cemetery are rising from their common grave. One of them has already reached the top of the Communards' Wall, adorned with funeral wreaths in their memory, and is straddling the crest, looking toward the city whose lights can be seen in the distance.

In his illustrations for Le chambard socialiste, Steinlen used the alias Petit Pierre, thus playing on his name, which, in German, means "little stone."

The caption reads in the original French: Au mur des fédérés. — Il faut des régiments entiers pour garder ces mort-là.
