Description:

This design shows a humorous coat of arms peppered with whimsical details such as a bird-faced helmet adorned with bells like a fool’s hat. By way of emblems the shield displays a gallows, a bottle of wine, a clyster syringe. This picture is used as the headpiece illustration to the prologue of the first ten stories.

The caption reads in the original French: Les armes de la gayeté.
