Description:

View of the Cistern of Philoxenos, also known in Turkey as Binbirdirek Sarnıcı, which literally means "Cistern of 1001 Columns." It is located on the European side of Istanbul, where it was built in the fifth century and actually has 224 columns, of which over 20 can be seen in this illustration.

At the time the book was published, the cistern had been converted into a silk manufactory, as suggested by the figures populating the picture, particularly one who appears to be operating a spinning wheel.
